Linking Java to FORTRAN?

Has anyone linked VisAD ( or any other Java program ) to a FORTRAN
app?   We have found when dealing with C/C++ apps that sockets and JNI
are both good solutions, but I would like to hear what the possibilities
are with FORTRAN.
