Im not sure what the gigabytes are. The files themselves are that big (about 250 Gbytes total), but the catalogs should not be.

All the interesting WCS URLs are rooted at 

  http://motherlode.ucar.edu:8080/thredds/idd/models.xml

You need to parse this catalog tree looking for datasets with service type = "WCS". The netcdf-java library has classes to do this if you want to use them.

There will be 2 or 3 levels in the tree, and all the "leaves" will have the form:

  http://motherlode.ucar.edu:8080/thredds/wcs/model/NCEP/[model]/[domain]/[variant?]/[runtime]

Each of these is a dataset containing 10-50 gridded variables. In WCS terminology, each of these is a WCS "server" containing 10-50 coverages.

We will eventually aggregate over runtime, however to do this right we may need 2D time coordinates in the WCS.
