    Noise in radiometric data

*Date/Time(UTC) Message Issued:*
    16 November 2007, 1830 UTC

*Satellite(s) Involved:*
     NOAA-18

*Instrument(s) Involved:*
     AMSU-A

*Product(s) Involved/Affected:*
    Those using channel 9

*Date/Time(UTC) of Initial Implementation:*
    14 November 2007, Time 1852 UTC

*Details/Specifics of Change:*
On November 14 (day 318) and 15 (day 319), an anomaly was detected in
several passes of the NOAA-18 AMSU-A (see below). Noise was detected in
channel 9 radiometric data. This appeared to be a sporadic problem that
affected several scans in the mid latitudes. In the level 1b data, the
channel 9 calibration quality flag bit 5 was set in the data record when
the anomaly occurred. Data was affected within passes with data times
between day 318 at 1852 UTC through day 319 at 0534 UTC for the first
occurrence and between day 319 at 1030 UTC through 1541 UTC for the
second occurrence. NOAA has a team investigating the anomaly.
