SUBJECT   CHANGE IN SNOWFALL AND SNOW DEPTH OBSERVATIONS
 
     THE NWS IS CURRENTLY IMPLEMENTING NEAR REAL-TIME COLLECTION
AND DISSEMINATION OF COOPERATIVE OBERVER /COOP/ SNOWFALL AND SNOW
DEPTH OBSERVATIONS THROUGH THE REMOTE OBSERVATION SYSTEM
AUTOMATION /ROSA/ DATA COLLECTION SYSTEM. PLANS CALL FOR THE ROSA
SYSTEM TO COLLECT OBSERVATIONS INITIALLY AT LOCATIONS SURROUNDING
211 SITES WHERE THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION /FAA/ IS
RESPONSIBLE FOR AUTOMATED SURFACE OBSERVING SYSTEM /ASOS/
AUGMENTATION/BACKUP. HOWEVER SNOWFALL AND SNOW DEPTH OBSERVATIONS
ARE AVAILABLE AT 44 ASOS/WFO CO-LOCATED AIRPORT SITES THIS WINTER
AS WELL AS AT 74 NEW WFO LOCATIONS.
 
     THE EVENTUAL EXPANSION OVER THE NEXT SEVERAL WINTER SEASONS
OF THE SNOWFALL/ SNOW DEPTH NETWORK TO INCLUDE OVER THREE
THOUSAND CURRENT OFFICIAL COOP OBSERVERS WILL ENHANCE
OBSERVATIONAL DATA SOURCES AVAILABLE TO THE USER COMMUNITY. NWS
PLANS FOR DISSEMINATION OF THE COOP OBSERVATIONS VIA NOAA WEATHER
WIRE SERVICE AND THE FAMILY OF SERVICES.
 
     AN EXECUTIVE SUMMARY IMPLEMENTATION PLAN DETAILS THE ON-
GOING EFFORT TO EXPAND THE SNOWFALL/SNOW DEPTH NETWORK. THIS
DOCUMENT AS WELL AS A LIST OF COOP SNOWFALL OBSERVATIONS AS THEY
COME ON LINE IS AVAILABLE ON THE INTERNET AT THE FOLLOWING URL
