[netcdfgroup] Netcdf older version libraries

Okay this is helpful.  You are not linking in the library properly.   
Instead of  "/usr/local/lib/libnetcdf.a"  you need to have:  "-L/usr/ 
local/lib -lnetcdf".  Also, my guess is that you will need to compile  
such that subroutine names are lower case.  But try at least the  
above change.  Also check that in your original build that fortran  
wasn't built separately, i.e. look in /usr/llocal/lib for a file  
libnetcdff.a
