What about adding support for jar or zip files to the netCDF library (if it doesn't already exist)? This would not only allow users to include XML markup with netCDF files, but would also make it easier to distribute and/or manage multiple netCDF files in one package. And users wouldn't have to rewrite their netCDF files...
