[ldm-users] Windows and LDM replacement

I agree it's an assumption, but since IDV and McIDAS-V and the GEMPAK replacement will be Java based it's a reasonable assumption..or more like we hope that isn't the case.

I of course would want Solaris x86 support as well, and I am assuming Mac folks would chime in as well, maybe BSD as well.

I am still against Windows support, because I see the man hours invested in developing and also supporting something like this on Windows as something that would severely limit Unidata's ability to support it's other applications..basically echoing what Dan said.  That's the other thing that worries me about adding Windows support is that it might turn Unidata into a Windows and Linux only shop since they could not afford to support anything else.  I absolutely do not want to stop using Solaris x86.  It is still vastly superior to Linux when it comes to stability under load..would I use Linux if I were forced to, of course, but that would be a last resort for me.

It seems to me we're jumping to the conclusion that LDM2 is intended only on
Windows and that it will be Java... If there's a way to have it function on
Linux & Windows, without being Java, I see no reason anyone would object?

I also think IDV is better under Windows than Solaris or Linux..and I will
conceed Windows has good points.  However the data ingest is the backbone of
one's whole operations...and like you say Java is ust not worth it.  Makes
more sense to me for Unidata to insist on UNIX/Linux only platforms for that
portion and then as Dan suggested maybe offer some help to those new to UNIX
or Linux.  It's not like an LDM-type only box needs that much attention.  I
never touch our PDI NOAAport boxes at all.  I would touch my other LDM boxes
if they weren't doing so many other things.
