IDV and McIDAS area files

I am new to the list, so if this topic has come up, please forgive me. 
 I am having trouble displaying locally generated McIDAS area files. 
 They appear to be read in properly and mapped, but the display shows 
the whole area as a single shade of grey.

Any ideas?
