[gembud] GEMPAK going away in 3-5 years?

My reference to a 'rumor' is regarding AWIPS2 being available to the
public.

I also said: "In my opinion, this has been an excellent discussion."

I sincerely apologize if you have taken this personally.

The intent of my post was to stir some interest in a common AWIPS2 forum
where users like us could have these types of discussions.

In no way was this post directed at anyone in particular. I again
sincerely apologize!

Well, I am not starting rumors. How could I start a rumor about
something I never heard of?

As I stated in my first post I read about AWIPS2 on the Unidata website,
and quoted the passage:

http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/newsletter/2008jan/index.html

Article written by Don Murray who just posted:

"At the recent Fall Users Committee meeting, two items were discussed
that brought the need for this capability to the forefront. First, many
Unidata sites have been archiving case studies in GEMPAK format. As new
member Bill Gallus from Iowa State stated, accessing these data in the
IDV would be a boon to IDV use in the community. There is the belief
that some scientists are not using IDV because of the lack of support
for the GEMPAK file format in which they store their data. The second
pressing issue is the impending transition of NAWIPS/GEMPAK to AWIPS2 in
the next 3-5 years. At this point, it is unknown how that will impact
Unidata's GEMPAK users, but the committee thought that having IDV
support GEMPAK data files would be a way for GEMPAK users to transition
to the IDV if they wanted."

Would it be possible for UNIDATA to add an AWIPS2 group to their mailing
list to subscribe to?

This is the first I've heard about AWIPS2 being available to the public.
If this is just a rumor, that's fine. However, a mailing list, or some
other forum, where information is free flowing can squelch the rumor if
it indeed is a rumor.

In my opinion, this has been an excellent discussion. Having been in
the weather business for 18 years, I've seen the NWS transition from
AFOS to GEMPAK/NAWIPS to AWIPS. Gempak has been around and steady for
most of that 18 years. However, it's naive to think that GEMPAK will be
around forever, and this has been a wake up call to at least begin
thinking about an alternative system. At the same time though, I'm not
going to believe that AWIPS2 is going to be available to the public
until I see it on a NOAA site.

Some AWIPS2 forum to keep the information free flowing can/will help
keep the rumors to a minimum. So with that, would it be possible to set
up an AWIPS2 list?

Thanks!

-Mike-
