LDM + GEMPAK with VMWare Player

Did that, built under root user, everything appears to build correctly, but
nothing is in the bin directory. Tried under user ldm, I get permission
denied errors left and right. I put ldm user under group 'root', no change.

[ldm at localhost src]$ make distclean
make[1]: Entering directory '/usr/local/ldm/ldm-6.4.5/src'

Making 'distclean' in directory /usr/local/ldm/ldm-6.4.5/src/config

make[2]: Entering directory '/usr/local/ldm/ldm-6.4.5/src/config'
rm -f *.a *.o *.ln *.i *.log \
	ldmconfig.h
rm: cannot remove `ldmconfig.h': Permission denied

etc...
The ldm's user directory is /usr/local/ldm so I'm not sure why it would
trigger permission denied errors.

That's me!

If you didn't go System / Add Remove Software and make sure that you
check Development Libraries & Development Tools. Sounds like that did
not happen since it can't find lex.
