[galeon] GALEON-related OGC Activities Update

NOTE: The galeon mailing list is no longer active. The list archives are made available for historical reasons.

Hi all,
In recent weeks, there have been many areas of OGC activity related to
GALEON. This note is an attempt to outline highlights of the areas of
interest and provide pointers to more detailed information.

At the OGC Technical Committee (TC) meeting (Mar 30 - Apr 2):

   - the WCS standards working group formally adopted the the CF-netCDF and
   OPeNDAP extension <goog_1239638086101>WCS extension
documen<http://sites.google.com/site/galeonteam/Home/GALEON%202%20Key%20Documents/09-018-WCS-ExtensionFor-CF-netCDF%26OPeNDAP.doc?attredirects=0>t
as a discussion paper ultimately targeted at WCS 2.0:

   - the OGC established a Meteorology Domain Working Group. This effort
will be led by Chris Little of the UK Met Office. This grew out of an ECMWF
Workshop on GIS Standards November 2008. An effort will be made to
coordinate with related domain working groups such as Hydrology via the
Earth System Science domain working group to foster interoperability among
the data systems of the individual groups.

Stefano's presentation on the CF-netCDF and OPeNDAP Extension to

At the TC meeting and in WCS SWG telecons before and after, several
additional topics of interest to GALEON are under discussion:

   - multiple time dimensions (e.g., forecast model run time, and forecast
   time)
   - parameterized dimention (e.g., pressure as a vertical dimension)
   - uneven grid point spacing (including conversions back and forth to
   index space)
   - continuous coverages with non-geometric interpolations

Related to those important issues, two key ISO specification documents are
under revision and extension at this point, so there is an opportunity to
influence those ISO specifications as well as those of OGC:

   - ISO 19123 (Geographic information -- Schema for coverage geometry and

functions<http://www.iso.org/iso/iso_catalogue/catalogue_tc/catalogue_detail.htm?csnumber=40121>
) which is the Generalized Coverage Specification

http://www.iso.org/iso/iso_catalogue/catalogue_tc/catalogue_detail.htm?csnumber=40121
   - ISO 19111 (Geographic information -- Spatial referencing by
coordinates<http://www.iso.org/iso/iso_catalogue/catalogue_tc/catalogue_detail.htm?csnumber=4112>
) which defines standard Coordinate Reference Systems

As these discussions coalesce, I will attempt to summarize the important
ones on the GALEON wiki and forward relevant OGC email discussions to the
GALEON email list.
