Announcing the 2007 Training Workshop for Unidata Software
July 20 - August 10 2007

The Unidata Program Center is pleased to announce its 2007 Software Training Workshop. The workshop features our display and analysis packages McIDAS, GEMPAK, and the IDV, data access and management tools, the Local Data Manager (LDM), the Network Common Data Form (netCDF) and netCDF-JAVA, and the THREDDS software for cataloging, browsing, and accessing remote data and metadata.

Unidata’s training workshops are developed and presented by the software developers and support staff for each package, so you can be sure to get your questions answered.

Sessions

NetCDF for Data Providers and Developers: July 20 (Friday)

This one day session for data providers and developers will include an overview of the use of parallel netCDF, an introduction to netCDF-4, and a talk on HDF5 for netCDF-4 users:

GEMPAK: July 23 - 25 (Monday - Wednesday)

This session will describe how to use the GEMPAK package in a variety of real-time and research contexts. Topics covered will include general design concepts, graphical user interfaces, writing interactive and batch scripts, configuring decoders and data tables, use with archived and case study data sets, output device drivers, and data formats.

LDM: July 26 - 27 (Thursday - Friday) (This Session is Full)

This session will cover LDM site management. Topics will include LDM installation, configuration, tuning, troubleshooting, and maintenance. Attendees are expected to have a working knowledge of Unix and Internet networking, including the following:

Note: Material will cover one and one-half days. The afternoon of the second day will be available for those who would like assistance remotely managing their LDM installation.

THREDDS Data Server Administration: July 30 - 31 (Monday - Tuesday) (This Session is Full)

This two day session is for system administrators and data providers to learn how to install, configure and maintain the THREDDS Data Server (TDS). Security, debugging, adding metadata, and serving IDD data are also covered.

Introductory IDV: August 1 - 2 (Wednesday - Thursday) (This Session is Full)

This session will cover installing and configuring the IDV, loading, displaying, and manipulating data, creating custom diagnostic functions, and Jython scripting.

Advanced IDV: August 3 - 4 (Friday - Saturday)

This workshop will cover advanced topics for those interested in customizing and extending the IDV. Attendees must be familiar with the use of the IDV (i.e. topics covered in the Introduction to IDV workshop). The session will cover issues such as creating custom applications, adding new data sources and displays. A knowledge of Java programming would be helpful, but not necessary, especially on the second day.

netCDF Java - Writing an I/O Service Provider: August 6 (Monday)

This one day session for intermediate to advanced Java programmers will focus exclusively on writing an "I/O Service Provider" implementation. This allows third parties to use the IDV (to view) and TDS (to serve) their specialized file formats.

McIDAS: August 7 - 10 (Tuesday - Friday)

Data access in McIDAS follows a client-server architecture known as the Abstract Data Distribution Environment (ADDE). The workshop's focus is on ADDE concepts from both client and server perspectives including creating and publishing datasets. Additional topics will include: McIDAS-X system installation and setup; installation and configuration of the McIDAS-XCD (McIDAS decoders for NOAAPORT datastream data) and LDM-MCIDAS packages (Unidata-Wisconsin datastream decoders); McIDAS scripting facilities; and manipulation of locally-held and remote image, point, and grid datasets.

Registration Fee

There is a registration fee of $50 per session to attend the Training Workshop, charged upon acceptance into the individual sessions.

Acceptance

We review all registration requests before issuing confirmations in order to give priority to our university community.  This means that after completing the on-line registration form, your status is pending until we send you a confirmation e-mail. This is not the same as the auto-reply e-mail that is sent immediately after you complete your on-line registration request.

Location

With one exception, the workshop will be held at the Unidata Program Center in UCAR's Foothills Lab 4 at 3300 Mitchell Lane, Boulder Colorado 80301. The exception is the netCDF Developers session on Friday, July 20th that will be held at the UCAR Center Green Campus in the CG1 auditorium, 3080 Center Green Drive, Boulder Colorado, 80301.   Map
